Stages 1–3 · Bulgaria
The Corsa Rosa starts outside Italy with three Bulgarian stages — Black Sea coast, Veliko Tarnovo, and a Plovdiv–Sofia run — before the race transfers to Calabria for the Italian opening.
19 May
Stage 10 · Viareggio → Massa
The only individual time trial of the race: 40 km along the Tuscan coast. The biggest single test of the legs — time gaps that won't be made back in the mountains.
29–30 May
Stages 19 & 20 · Dolomites finale
The final mountain weekend before Rome. The Passo Giau returns to the Giro after years away, and the GC contenders get their last roll of the dice in the high Dolomites.
First raced in 1909 by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Giro is the season's first Grand Tour. The maglia rosa — pink for the newspaper's paper — has gone to riders like Coppi, Merckx, Hinault, Indurain and, more recently, Pogačar and Yates.
Where the Tour is built on time trials and France's flat north, the Giro belongs to the climbers. The Stelvio, the Mortirolo, the Zoncolan, the Passo Giau — every May the route finds another way to crack the GC contenders open in the high passes.
Every Grand Tour has its own visual language. These are the jerseys riders fight for across three weeks — each one marking a different race within the race.
